The Benefits of Using Vegan Skincare

When people hear the term ‘Vegan’ they often think about dietary restrictions, but you don’t have to follow a vegan diet to understand the benefits of plant-based ingredients. Being vegan is no longer used exclusively in a dietary context – ‘Vegan skincare’ is a continuously growing industry. As many of us start to become more concerned about our impact on the environment, the safety of animals and the health of our skin, vegan skincare is the only ethical choice.

What is Vegan Skincare?

Although you might assume most skincare products use clean vegan ingredients, there are actually a number of skincare brands that use animal products in their formula. From daily scrubs to creams and clays, animal products can be found in almost every type of skincare product. It can be incredibly difficult to avoid animal products, especially if you don’t know what to look for.

Vegan skincare means that products are created without using ingredients derived from animals, including animal by-products such as honey. This is completely different from cruelty-free, as a product that wasn’t tested on animals can still contain animal by-products like cow’s milk and lanolin. The best way to avoid both animal ingredients and animal testing is to opt for vegan skincare.

Why Vegan Skincare is Better

We believe that vegan skincare isn’t just beneficial for animals or the environment, they’re also beneficial for you and your skin. What makes vegan skincare products better for your skin? Eliminating animal products from your skincare regimen can actually eliminate a number of issues and additives that are naturally found in these ingredients. This can be extremely helpful for those with sensitive skin. Plants are our primary source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which are the best way to nourish your skin.

  • Gentle on the Skin – Vegan skincare is more gentle on the skin and hair than other skincare that may contain animal products. Most of what we put on our skin is absorbed into the body. Animal products typically contain artificial or synthetic ingredients, meaning that ingredients like uric acid extracted from cows and carmine extracted from insects will be deposited into the skin. This explains the tendency of certain products to cause clogged pores and irritate sensitive skin.
  • Great for the Environment – The planet has always provided for us and now it’s time to return the favor. The best vegan products are typically 100% natural and organic which means it is not harmful to the environment and the ingredients can break back down into non-harmful components that can be reused by the environment.
  • Rich in Essential Nutrients – Vegan skincare formulas often contain plant ingredients that bring more vitamins and antioxidants to the skin. These minerals and nutrients help to repair and maintain the integrity of the skin, keeping your skin healthier and refreshed longer.
  • Protects the Animals – It only makes sense that vegan skincare products would be better for animals. Although vegan products aren’t likely to be tested on animals, make sure to opt for vegan and cruelty-free products. This allows you to keep your conscience clear when using your favorite skincare products.
