Is vegan skincare really better for you?

Skincare and beauty products in general have come a long way. Hydrating cleansers, serums, gentle face masks, and all types of natural formulas have largely replaced the ultra-drying, harsh products of yesterday. And on top of this, more and more people of all genders are now being encouraged to take care of the skin they’re in. 

But as with any progress, there’s always a new frontier for us to explore, and vegan skincare appears to be next on the menu. What’s all the hype about, though? Is it really better for us and what goes into it? Read along to find out everything you need to know and more. 

What is Vegan Skincare?

Vegan skincare is a category of skincare products that eliminate both animal products and all their byproducts. This means they don’t make use of ingredients like lanolin, beeswax, carmine, honey, or others commonly included in conventional beauty products. They instead opt to use animal-free alternatives such as green and white teas, chamomile, aloe, castor oil, vitamin C, and more, most of which can produce similar effects (or even better!) than their non-vegan counterparts. 

The Benefits Over Conventional Skincare:

So, now that you know a little more about the basics of vegan skincare, it’s time to answer the big question: What are the benefits over conventional options? Is it actually better for our skin? The short answer is usually yes.

Most people will find that vegan products come with several benefits. Curious about what those are? Here are some of the most significant.

  • More animal-friendly:
  • Let’s start with the obvious. One of the biggest benefits of vegan skincare is that it leaves animals out of the equation – opting for ingredients that are far more ethical. Huge bonus for both us and our furry friends. What’s not to love about that?

  • Kinder to the skin:
  • Frequently find your skin feeling itchy or irritated by your skincare? It happens to the best of us, but vegan skincare might be able to help. Because it typically prioritizes using fewer ingredients and mainly those that are light and hydrating, it’s usually far kinder to our skin than other alternatives. 

    More vitamin-rich and nourishing:

    On top of being less drying and irritating than other skincare products, vegan skincare is more nourishing. Vitamin-C, antioxidants, and all sorts of other food for your skin additions find their way onto the ingredient label, leaving you looking and feeling your best. 

  • More environmentally-friendly:
  • Vegan and cruelty-free are a natural, common combination in the skincare world, but vegan products also often find themselves all-natural and organic. The result? They’re much better for our environment. This is especially true for those that use recycled packaging. Lucky for us, that’s also becoming more of a norm, seriously helping our planet out in the fight against excessive waste and single-use plastic.

    Nicer, less intense scents:

    Ever open a bottle of some cleanser or cream and immediately feel like you’re being assaulted by a department store perfume tester? We definitely have and that’s part of why we adore vegan products. Most leave artificial scents behind, resulting in far lighter, nicer scents. For that, everyone should be grateful.

    The Bottom Line-

    An overwhelming majority of people can see amazing benefits by switching over to a vegan skincare regimen. 

    Between being better for the world around us, doing less harm to the animals we love, providing more nourishment to our skin, and being safer for our overall health, vegan skincare is definitely worth giving it a try. Don’t be afraid to give it a try nor go through a few products. It might take a while to find something that fits perfectly into your routine or works wonderfully for your skin, but you’ll likely get there in the end.
